About Sheffield

Sheffield is so named because of its origins in a field on the River Sheaf that runs through the city. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base.

The population of the City of Sheffield is estimated at over 500,000 people making it one of the eight largest English cities outside London and the wider urban area which extends beyond the city, has a population of over 600,000.

Sheffield obtained worldwide recognition during the 19th century for its production of steel where many of the innovations in the industry were developed locally. The City is located near the confluence of five rivers, with much of the city having been built on hillsides with views either into the city centre or out to the countryside.

More than a third of the city is located in the Peak District National Park. In addition you'll find 150 woodlands and 50 public parks all within Sheffield. With an estimated total of over two million living trees, Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in Europe. It is rumoured that there are 4 mature trees to every person living here.

With superb bars and restaurants, endless shopping opportunities, world-class sporting facilities and more, there is never a shortage of things to do in Sheffield.
